Secrets always Find A To Get Way Out
Uradell did a tremendous job of keeping you on the edge of your seat. The characters were so very true to life. The book caused one to think about what they do. The interweave of the town and people led to your suspense. The town was brought to life by the author and gave you a sense of being there. The ending left you spellbound and waiting. The book was very interesting.

Thinking Classroom, The: Learning and Teaching in a Culture of Thinking
Published in Paperback by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (06 October, 1994)

Great Book! Intelligent Approaches to Thinking and Learning
"The Thinking Classroom:" Learning and Teaching in a Culture of Thinking by Shari Tishman, David N. Perkins and Eileen Jay is a great book. The book is one of the top picks as required reading for participants of the "Project Zero Institute" at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. These great Harvard Professors present a 207 page book that is worth reading over and over.

I purchased it for my professional library and refer to it often. My particular interests are "Thinking Dispositions" which are addressed very well, but must be reflected upon from time to time to be sure that genuine understanding is obtained.

This is not a one time read type of a book and then put away. This is a book for those who are profoundly interested in knowing, reflecting and understanding connections to "thinking" and "understanding"... and especially "thinking dispositions".

You may be a brilliant individual who doesn't seem to accomplish what is expected of you either from teachers, employers and/or particularly yourself. Maybe the content in this book on thinking dispositions might explain something to you.

This book is for the scholar and the learner...and not a difficult read.

This Land Is Our Land
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (November, 1994)
Authors: Alethea K. Helbig and Agnes Regan Perkins
Average review score:

A terrific guide to finding out all about Us
This resource contains annotated bibliographies for books of fiction, oral tradition and poetry for these major groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-Americans.

As stated in the preface, the resources are limited to those published 1985 through 1993 for individuals of preschool age through high school. Resources focus on the American experience, and do not include content or stories that occur in other locations. A total of 570 resources are listed in this title.

Resources were reviewed by an Advisory Board for suitability. Advisors are clearly identified and include librarians, professors and a teacher of various ethnic backgrounds. Resource annotations are listed by type (fiction, oral tradition, poetry) and ethnic group. Also, resources are indexed by title, writer, illustrator, grade level and subject.

Annotated citations are substantial and provide appropriate detail on the resource's content, quality, format, illustrations, interpretation of subject and suitability for intended audience. Through a quick reading of the citation, a teacher, librarian, parent or other user can easily determine whether the book might interest the reader, be topical for a lesson or plan, and serve well for individual reading, storytelling or other uses.

At first glance, I would include this item in my collection of multi-ethnic resources as it provides a relatively recent, comprehensive list of print materials with quality, objective and complete annotated citations. This book is limited only by its scope of ethnic groups. For example, I could not answer patron questions or provide resources about their European ethnic background.

Before making a final decision to buy this book, I would select and read a representative sampling of several listed resources. I could then compare and contrast the accuracy, completeness and objectivity of the resource's citation with my own independent read.

To the Ends of the Earth: Four Expeditions to the Arctic, the Congo, the Gobi, and Siberia
Published in Hardcover by Pantheon Books (October, 1983)
Author: John Perkins
Average review score:

A Whole New World from those who discovered it.
"To The Ends of The Earth" by John Perkins is more than a book, it is also a poem. Every page is lucid and concise. There is no pretention in the way this book is written. The sole purpose of the book is to inform and enlighten. I truly feel as if this book brought me to a higher level of thinking. The magic of this book lies in the complexity of human nature and the simplicity of what we all are searching for. "To The Ends..." is about life in the raw, as it was for all of our ancestors and still is for some. Mr. Perkins has collected the photographs, from the Archives of the Museum of Natural History in New York, taken by the explorers of the Arctic, Congo, Gobi, and Siberia. Therefore, each page of text is accompanied by a photograph that serves as a window into the heart of the jungle/desert/tundra of the most untamed areas of the world. When reading this book one is transported to a different time and place, and one feels part of something real. I felt a connection to the people in this book, and felt an inexplicable lonliness when I had finnished it. Although it is about simple people, this book questions the fundaments of the human struggle on a cosmic level, so frequently overlooked in the world we live in today. This book is a treasure and a gift to all humanity.

Tri-Tuning: Harmonizing Your Mind, Body & Spirit To Live Beyond Fear
Published in Paperback by Universal Quest Publishing (01 March, 1999)
Author: Hilda Neff Perkins
Average review score:

Hilda Perkins - Her Dedication Shows in a Seminal Work
The author of this work was my student for several years both before going to Japan and after returning. She has taken a vary difficult oriental concept, integrated it with western ideas and put it to words for westerners. Her book is essentially a non-martial exploitation of the same concepts which appear in C.M. Shifflett's "Ki in Aikido". Hilda's book contains a necessary amount of discussion about basic concepts of tri-tuning (mind-body-spirit integration), a term she coined to describe what she felt about life and the need to bring all parts of her being into balance. Her writings are clearly influenced by her training in Japan with Aikido Master Koichi Tohei and his desciple, Koretoshi Maruyama.

The book is highly readable to those with an open mind, providing not only discussions of hard to understand concepts but also exercises the reader can try themselves to validate what has been said. Take some time to read the Table of Contents to understand the organization of the information. This will be a great aid in using the book, because this is a book that you will use, and use again to help you integrate your mind-body-spirit self. Then you will find yourself talking to others in your acquaintence about what you have learned. You will likely become an advocate of her concepts for yourself and others.

An undying favorite!
This was my favorite childhood book. It is intended for beginning readers. A touching story of friendship and honesty, it's a must-read for all kids. Ah Mee and his little elephant, Tubby, are fishing for Foodle-fish. But their boat isn't big enough for a boy and his elephant, so Tubby goes in search of one that is. When he finds and steals the great Poo-Bah's boat, Ah Mee is locked in a tower. Tubby can't speak, so he needs to somehow show the Poo-Bah that Ah Mee is innocent. What is a little elephant to do? Find this heartwarming and beautifully illustrated book today!
